From the Executive Director...... What a hectic but wonderful year it has been. As you read through this newsletter, you will learn about some of the fundraisers that have taken place this year. Most of these are annual events, so make sure to start checking our webpage to have access to current information. As Thanksgiving is over now and the Christmas holidays are upon us, we are in our busiest season of the year. We see the tremendous outpouring of love by way of the many donations of food, toiletries, paper and household goods, monetary donations, and gifts for the kids. We appreciate you, our donors, so much. The coming year will hold some big projects for us as well. As many of you know, we will need to relocate the Barrett House Emergency Shelter because our lease will expire soon. We are in the process of site selection and as soon as we have secured the new site, we will share our plans with you. A major Capital Funds Campaign is planned to kick off next year to raise the approx. $1.8 million that is needed to acquire a property, build and furnish the new shelter. Other plans include paying down the mortgage at Casa Verde, our permanent housing program. This program has been a blessing for our clients by providing them with safe, secure, and affordable housing. As you might recall, the down payment was provided by an anonymous donor with the stipulation to raise matching funds. Some of these funds have been raised and I would urge you to consider a Christmas gift of any size to help us with this project! Also, recent repairs of a boiler caused us to pay out approximately $4,000 that needs to be replenished. Casa Milagro just conducted its 8th Art Show. Our Art Therapy program is going strong and the women produce wonderful pieces of art for every show. Casa Milagro receives a limited amount of funding with the remainder having to be raised from private funding. We are looking at replacing swamp coolers next year, which will place an additional burden on our already tight budget. On the brighter side, as we are awaiting word on the renewal of our Bridges Program contract, one of our clients became a homeowner this year. What a great success this young woman is! I often look at our women in comparison to the first Christmas. The innkeeper who turned Mary and Joseph away, was he too busy to notice that the woman was about to give birth to a baby? Would his reaction have been different if he had known that this baby would grow up to become the most famous Man in all of history, and more than a Man, the Son of God? Let us not be too busy with all the trimmings of the season to notice the needs of others. Pray for those families whose homes will be filled with tension this Christmas; for the homes that are broken, and for those who do not have a home at all. Let us remember broken hearts and the tears that are shed. Pray that we will have open hearts and eyes toward the suffering of others. Join us by giving of yourselves so that we may continue our work in restoring shattered lives. I thank you for all you do and wish you a peaceful Christmas,

Barrett House Attic At Old Town Closes Its Doors Our thrift store location in Old Town closed in August of this year. Sadly, the Old Town location did not work as well as we had expected. I know that the Old Town store was more convenient to drop off donations for many of you, but hope that you will continue to support us by taking your donations to 4308 Lomas NE. We have been at that location since 1986 and in September, we expanded our store to include the space next door. If you have not been at our Lomas store lately, please come and visit us. The new addition houses mostly furniture and household goods, therefore making more space in the original store for clothing, shoes, books, etc. Linda Cotton hosted her first ever Children's Concert on Sunday, November 5, 2000, at Hoffmantown Church. The concert, which featured music from popular movies such as Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio and others, was well attended. Please look for information on this event in our Spring/Summer edition of the Beacon. First Annual Avon Global Running Event What a thrill it was to have Avon Global Running bring their world wide event to Albuquerque. The event was held on August 13th of this year. The Barrett Foundation was the recipient of this fundraiser which raised $1,000 through the running fees and a $5,000 donation through the Avon Foundation. This is a women's only running event and we are looking forward to doing this again next year. This is the largest women's only running event in New Mexico. Grete Waitz, the Norwegian runner who won the New York City Marathon 9 times and was a Silver Medalist in the 1984 Olympics, was in Albuquerque for a press conference. Along with Kathrine Switzer, the Program Director of Avon Running Global Women's Circuit who was the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon they made a very inspirational pair to get women walking and running. New runners clinics are held in advance to the event. Contact us about how to participate next year, get in shape, and participate in this wonderful fundraiser for the Barrett Foundation!
9th Annual Harvest Dinner Another Success! The 9th Annual Harvest Dinner Celebration of Hope was held on September 9, 2000. The following companies/individuals sponsored the event:
We would also like to thank the many contributors who provided items for our silent auction. Linda Cotton and her band provided the entertainment. This year's auction featured a stunning diamond necklace, a beautiful sculpture, original paintings, Symphony tickets, and a balloon ride just to name a few. If you have not been to our fundraiser before, you don't want to miss next year. This is really a lot of fun. Join us next year for our 10th annual event and enjoy a wonderful dinner at the Sheraton Old Town Innt, the music of Linda Cotton, a silent auction as well as a live auction with many fabulous prizes. Mark September 22, 2001 on your calendar as the event that you don't want to miss.
