History and Mission

Brother Mathias Barrett was the legendary friend of the homeless; his life's work was providing shelter to the homeless men and women throughout the United States.

Original Barrett House Building in Downtown AlbuquequeIn 1985 he founded Barrett House emergency shelter for women and children. In 2005, Barrett House moved into its present location, expanding its capacity to provide a safe and healthy environment to more clients.

In 1988 we opened Casa Milagro, a group home for women over 35 who have psychiatric disabilities. We provide a permanent housing option, Art Therapy and AfterCare.

In 1997 we established Bridges to Self-Sufficiency, a transitional housing program offering single women with or without children the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to live independently. The program provides intensive case management and life skills training.

Casa Verde was established in 1999 and provides affordable, permanent housing for 13 women living with chronic mental illness.

In 2005, Casa Socorro was established as a permanent housing program for single women who have been chronically homeless.

Barrett Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization in Albuquerque, New Mexico, helping homeless women and children build better lives. In addition to food, clothing and shelter, Barrett Foundation provides case management, critical skills training and the support needed to plan and establish a more stable future for themselves and their children.
