Like many in Albuquerque, the Barrett Foundation staff, board, and clients lost a beloved friend when Linda Cotton died on Thanksgiving Day, 2006. Through her generous gifts of music Linda Cotton helped numerous charities take care of the less fortunate. Known for her compassion for those who were suffering, she donated her time, energy and influence to raise money for causes throughout the community. She had served on the Board of Directors of Barrett Foundation for six years, rarely missing a meeting, and always bringing her boundless good humor to the table.

Whether it was people and animals struck by the Katrina disaster, or Albuquerque’s homeless women and children, Linda wanted to take care of others even after her own health had declined. Many personal friends also benefited from her generous spirit. Linda was a foster parent for hard-to-place youngsters for many years. She adopted pets when no one else wanted them and encouraged others to do so as well. As a Barrett board member she was an outspoken advocate for the homeless women at Barrett House. The Albuquerque Journal got it right when they said, “Linda Cotton was an Albuquerque treasure.”

Linda first performed at the Barrett Foundation annual fundraiser in 1998 and continued to be the main attraction for the next nine years, most recently performing with her band at the September 23, 2006 gala. People returned year after year just to hear Linda and her band. Her mix of R&B, gospel, blues and jazz was the perfect ending for the annual gala, enticing couples to the dance floor with her beautiful voice and great smile. In addition to donating her performance at the gala, she contributed a musical performance as an item in the live auction each year. Laughingly, she would go along with zealous auctioneers and graciously agree to “make that two performances” in order to raise more money for the Barrett Foundation.

Laughing, singing, giving…………………that was Linda. We will miss her for a very long time.
