A New Chapter for Maria and Sofia

When Maria moved to Albuquerque with her young daughter, she hoped it would be the beginning of a better chapter. Her sister had encouraged her to relocate from Farmington, assuring her that jobs and housing would be easier to find. But soon after their arrival, Maria’s sister decided to leave the state unexpectedly, leaving Maria and her daughter behind.

Determined not to uproot her daughter again—especially after a difficult school year—Maria chose to stay in Albuquerque. She found a job, but without stable housing, she and her daughter had to move into a local shelter that ultimately didn’t feel like the right fit. Maria sought help at Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless, where staff helped her apply for Barrett Foundation’s Motel Voucher Program.

Later, when space became available at Barrett House Shelter, she accepted the offer and moved in. Since then, Maria has taken incredible steps forward. With the help of her case manager, she obtained a new ID, recovered her vehicle, and recently began a new job that gives her the opportunity to rebuild her life.

“It feels safe here,” Maria said. “The staff are so kind. This place gave me the chance to start over.”

At Barrett House Shelter, Maria and her daughter have found more than just a roof over their heads—they’ve found stability, dignity, and hope for the future.
